Steel Riding Arenas

Clear-span steel arenas with no center posts to interrupt the ring

Steel arenas built for riding

A steel riding arena is a pre-engineered building designed around one requirement above everything else: a wide open floor with nothing in the middle of it. The frame is engineered and cut at the factory, then bolted together on site, which is what allows it to clear-span the full width of the arena without a support column anywhere near the riding surface.

CNO is a certified Federal Steel Systems dealer, and we quote, deliver, and stand up arenas for horse properties across southeast Michigan.

Why does clear span matter in an arena?

A column in the middle of a riding ring is a hazard the moment a horse is moving at speed. Steel frames clear-span up to 250 feet, so the entire footprint of the arena stays open. Bay widths up to 60 feet mean the building can be sized to whatever discipline you're riding, from a smaller home training space to a full competition-size ring.

Frames engineered for point loads also mean arena lighting, fans, or ventilation equipment can be hung from the structure without extra reinforcement down the line. High R-value panel options help manage condensation and temperature swings, which matters in an enclosed arena through a Michigan winter.

Overhead and walk door placement gets planned around how horses and equipment actually move in and out, not bolted on wherever is easiest.

Arena, barn, or both?

An arena covers the riding space. If you also need stalls, a tack room, or wash bays, take a look at our post-frame horse barns. A steel arena for riding pairs well with a post-frame barn for stalls, hay, and tack, and we can build both, as one project or phased over time.

Common questions

Why does clear span matter in a riding arena?

Any post inside the ring is an obstacle and a hazard once a horse and rider are moving. Steel frames span up to 250 feet without interior columns, so the full width of the arena stays open and usable for riding, training, or lessons.

How big can a steel riding arena be built?

Bay widths run up to 60 feet, and with clear spans up to 250 feet you can size the arena to the discipline you're riding, whether that's a smaller training space or a full-size competition ring.

What goes under a riding arena, slab or dirt?

Most riding rings don't get a slab. Horses ride on a prepared base, usually compacted stone dust or sand over a graded sub-base, with footing material on top. Concrete goes under stall areas, viewing rooms, or aisles if the building includes them. We'll sort out what your layout needs during the quote.

Do you also build stall barns, or just arenas?

We build both. If you need stalls, a tack room, and an aisle alongside or instead of an arena, our post-frame horse barns cover that. If you need both, we can quote a steel arena and a post-frame barn as one project.
